What is Gravity Die Casting?

In this process, molten metal is poured into a pre-heated semi-permanent/permanent die (mold) from a ladle or transfer vessel.

The force of gravity fills the die with minimum turbulence through one or more channels to reduce oxidation and foaming.

This minimizes porosity and inclusions, giving optimum metal characteristics in the final casting.

IPG Gravity Die Casting: A highly flexible option

Gravity Die Casting (GDC) machines are extremely flexible.

They can have a vertical or horizontal die opening, or alternatively utilize a tilting mechanism to control metal flow into the die. Like with Low Pressure Die Casting (LPDC), sand cores or 3D printed molds can also be used to produce parts with hollow sections or complex geometries.

With a variety of plate sizes available and a customizable number of dies, we can accommodate any requirements offering vertical, horizontal, and titling gravity die casting machines.

Three benefits of gravity die casting

Casting quality

The hardened metal dies used in gravity die casting enable the molten metal to cool and solidify quickly. This produces a fine grain structure, giving gravity cast parts excellent mechanical attributes like strength and stiffness. Such parts are also suitable for heat treatment.

Cost efficiency

Because the metal dies can be re-used, this ensures casting repeatability and allows for multiple casting cycles over longer time periods. The process is economical for, and adaptable to, short-run, medium-run, and mass production.

Automation

Gravity die casting is highly suited to automation and the productivity gains that come with that. With various automated cell configurations possible, metal casters of any size can benefit.

Confused about how best to configure your automated cell?

Don’t be. Simply by telling us your production needs, we’ll tailor and automate a carousel, linear or flexible gravity die casting set-up that’s perfect for you. Watch the video on our dedicated GDC page and you’ll see what we mean.

What are the most common applications?

Gravity die castings is ideal for diverse complex aluminum casting production of automotive parts such as: turbos, brake calipers, knuckles, engine cylinder heads, engine blocks and pistons. It suits many other industries too, from lighting components to kitchen tools.
